Welcome to Kona Regenerative Medicine. My name is Dr. Michael Hughes, and I appreciate you taking the time to visit our website.

Helping people live their fullest, healthiest lives has always been my passion. Life can throw many obstacles our way, and the impact of pain or chronic disease can be deeply limiting. My journey into regenerative medicine began with a simple curiosity about the body’s natural ability to heal and a desire to find better answers for those suffering.

Before I journeyed into medicine, I worked as a personal trainer. Many of my clients were dealing with long-standing pain, dysfunction, and were often prescribed NSAIDs or medications that only masked their symptoms. I remember thinking,

“There has to be a better way”

I knew there had to be a solution that addressed the root causes of pain—not just the symptoms. That search led me to regenerative medicine, a field that aligns perfectly with my mission: to empower the body’s own healing capabilities.

A pivotal moment came when I met the late Dr. Garry Shohet, who encouraged me to pursue medical school and follow my vision. His mentorship opened the door to a career that has become my life’s work.

While studying for an anatomy exam during medical school, I came across a lecture by Neil Riordan, PA, PhD, highlighting the success of stem cell research in Panama for spinal cord injuries. His results were incredible—and from that moment, I immersed myself in the world of regenerative modalities. I later discovered the work of pioneers like Dr. Harry Adelson of Docere Clinics, who set a high standard for stem cell procedures using bone marrow and adipose tissue.

In my fourth year of medical school, I personally experienced the power of regenerative medicine. After falling off a 40-foot cliff while hiking in Arizona, I severely injured my ankle. Dr. Tyna Moore treated me with prolotherapy, and the results were extraordinary. My recovery was faster, my pain drastically reduced, and my function fully restored.

That experience solidified my belief in this work. To deepen my understanding, I began experimenting on myself with prolotherapy and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to gain firsthand insight into the procedures I would later offer patients. This dual perspective, as both doctor and patient, has been essential to how I educate and care for others.

During residency, I applied regenerative modalities with great success. It became clear that Hawaii, and the broader medical community, needed more awareness and access to these powerful healing tools. That’s what inspired me to found Kona Regenerative Medicine.

Here, we offer safe, natural, and effective treatments that aim to revive, regenerate, and restore human tissue without relying solely on pharmaceuticals or invasive surgery. Our mission is to move beyond symptom management and deliver long-lasting, root-cause healing.
